I have a macbook pro. I downloaded "handbrake" -- and downloaded an hour long homemade video onto my mac. I've burned copies to distribute to people. But only a rare few of the copies have worked for people Most they won't play and it shows there is nothing on the DVD.
The Dvd's WILL play on my Mac and it shows that the video is there. Has anyone else experienced problems playing DVD's on other players besides Mac's when they've burned it on a Mac?
How can I fix the problem. Do I need to download a different burn program? What I need is for my DVD's that I burn on my MAC to be compatible with both PC and MAC.

Other info: they are not just bad dvd's. I've tried all of them and they don't work on my PC - but they do work on my mac. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

G'day and welcome to the forums.

What program did you use to burn the discs? Suggest the best it Toast Titanium 11. This program gives you the opportunity of burning programs for Mac Only and for Mac/PC. Don't think Disk Utility will do this.

How did you burn the DVDs? Did you use the standard Joilet file (works for both Mac and PCs) system and most importantly, did you close the DVD? It sounds like you may have left the DVDs open which if so, they will only play on your Mac not another computer.

As Harry pointed out, use either Toast (if you have it) or an easy to use program like the free "Burn" download from here.

+1 for Burn as it gives the Mac/PC option as well.

I used "hand brake" then used "burn"
Do you think it's possible a few people have old dvd players that won't play mac burned dvd's? I have an 8 year old pc lap top and the dvd's won't play on that either. So either I have to find a way to burn them an entirely new way -- Or accept the fact some people won't be able to play them. Not sure what to do. Thanks for any help!

CHSCAG -- what do you mean by close the disc?? Or left it open? I've never heard that before, so yeah I probably didn't do either. How do I do that??

<did you close the DVD? It sounds like you may have left the DVDs open which if so, they will only play on your Mac not another computer.>

That's exactly what is happening. Can you walk me through the steps?

Thanks!!

It depends on the software you're using. Toast and most other burning software will give you a choice of leaving the disk open for future additional burns. That means the TOC (Table of contents) is not closed. When you do that instead of writing the TOC and closing the disk, it will only play on your machine.

Multi Session burning to DVD media is not supported in Mac OS X anyway. (It is supported in Windows) Always choose to close the DVD. And be sure to use the Joilet standard method of burning. (Most burning software automatically defaults to using Joilet.)
