I can't figure out how to delete photos from iphoto on my macbook. I've tried dragging them into trash but they don't show up there, I don't have a delete button so can't use that. Even tried right clicking to go to 'show file' and drag them to trash from there, which seems to do the job but then they show up again in the library when I go back to iphoto. Can anyone help? I only have a small hard drive and need to make space! Cheers...

In iPhoto, with your photo(s) selected, on the menu bar go to Photos - Move to Trash.

Then you can either right click the Trash can or go the iPhoto menu and select Empty iPhoto Trash.

And, when you are simply dragging to the trash, are you dragging to the iPhoto trash, rather than the trashcan on the dock? You do need to use the iPhoto trash.

Nice one folks, cheers. Yeah I was trying to drag to trash on the dock, but also wasn't working using iphotos trash or 'move to trash' because I was in the 'recent' section rather than the 'library' bit. Sorted now anyway. Thanks...

If you are wondering why some photos cannot be deleted directly on iPhone, this is related with iTunes sync. If you sync photos via iTunes from Mac or PC to your iPhone, these photos or albums can’t be deleted from iPhone. You have to re-sync and manage these photos in iTunes.

Welcome. And thank you for your thoughtful response.

This thread is 8 years' old and I guess the solution was found back then - and Photos has now replaced iPhoto.
