Not really enough information to assist you. The MacBook Air models that year either came with a spinning hard drive or SSD. Which does yours have? And what version of OS X is it running? Just a guess: could be the drive is defective.

I just doublechecked this. No MacBook Air has ever had a spinning hard disk. Every one of them, from the original on up, uses an SSD.

Where did you double check that with? According to Mactracker the late 2008 MacBook Air (which the OP states he has) either came with a 4200 RPM drive or SSD. See below: Are they wrong?

Storage 120 GB 4200-rpm (SATA) or 128 GB (SSD)
Media Optional MacBook Air SuperDrive (MB397G/A)

My other half uses a first generation 2008 Macbook Air with a spinning hard drive. SSDs were a LOT more expensive in those days. SSDs became standard in 2010.

Thanks for confirming that. I don't know where chas_m obtained his information from, but it's likely he was referring to the later model MacBook Air machines which indeed only came equipped with an SSD.
