I'm trying to rename a folder that I had copied from another place on my desktop but am given this error. What's the best way around it?

"...can't be remamed right now because another operation is in progress, such as moving or copying an item or emptying the Trash."

Just as the message says, something else is being done with that folder (moving, copying, etc.). When the other operation is completed, you should be able to rename the folder—depending upon the number of files involved, that can take several minutes.

Yeah...nothing's going on the in background. It's been days and days.

It's possible that a non-Apple, third party app might be running in the background - or maybe not.

But one thing worth trying is to Boot into Safe Mode. All background functions that can be stopped along with all third party apps are blocked.

Then see if it works. At least you cannot do any harm in trying Safe Mode.

This Apple article covers allStartup Key combinations for all types of Mac. Scroll down to where you see Safe Mode (shown as Shift + Command).

Well, I finally installed my update and rebooted (had been holding off on that because I've had important projects up) and it worked. Thanks for the responses.
