I have a 2011 MacBook Pro 13" running MacOS Sierra (& Safari) and have a niggling fault, possibly linked to my MacOS Sierra upgrade from Mavericks (originally Snow Leopard). I run a Canon Pixma MG7751 Multifunction Printer (2016) which is a fantastic little machine for the price but my Mac is forever 'Searching for printer' when I start work each day, even though it had only had the lid closed overnight and the power switched off (sometimes it shuts down by itself if battery low).

Can never get the print queue to resume without a full reset and install in the preferences pane! Rebooting the Mac or printer or recycling the printer-cable USB still doesn't get a waiting print job going, nor does the printer dialog box 'pause - resume'. I have to reset the printing system via preferences at the start of every day -- then it's good for one day. I have tried re-installing the drivers from Canon's site but that doesn't help. Printers have always had a tendency to stall on this Mac when left unattended for a while but this is the first occasion the usual quick fixes haven't worked and I've needed to reset the print system in preferences: not a big job but an irritating necessity at the start of every day.

The drivers always remain on the system to be added back on the printer preferences pane but, curiously, two different 'Printers' (both named Canon 7700 Series) are selectable in the print dialog box. Let's call them 'old' and 'new'. I prefer the 'old' because the 'new' will not print 'High' quality on plain paper. I don't use wifi or anything wireless. I am aware of Canon's admitted communication issue with Sierra, dated 25 October 2016 (link below), which the 'new' driver is supposed to resolve, except it does not.

To anticipate a question, browsing with Firefox instead of Safari doesn't help, in fact Firefox fails to print double-sided which wastes a lot of paper (I use 100gsm Navigator Presentation for good dual-sided results).

Any suggestions? Thank you.

Why not give wifi a try? I have a slightly older Canon MG6650 and have not had any driver issues.

Interesting suggestion, thanks. I thought wifi was generally more trouble-prone. Does it involve any radiation issues in terms of constant transmission of EMFs when not actually printing?

Far too technical a question for me. Having looked up EMF online, I would say we are all surrounded - and doomed! My wifi is on permanently.

When "no printer is available" shows and you open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, is there any sign of your Canon Pixma MG7751 under the left Printer list?

If not, they were't installed properly.

You could always put on your tin foil hat and suit. ;D

And that might be easier than trying to avoid all the EMF surrounding everyone from an almost endless list of sources.

And yes, any northern latitude dwellers need to be aware of the Northern lights as well.

But seriously, no radiation issues at all from any printer or one's computer or cellphone for that matter… or… or…

BTW: We've been using a Canon Pixma MG5620 wirelessly for the last few years with no problems at all with any of our Macs or iDevices.

NOTE FOR THE MODS:

Maybe you could combine the two threads with the same duplicate subject.

The EMF levels from WiFi are significantly below any ionizing level that would affect you in any way. Your phone is a stronger source and is constantly communicating with the cellular network. The computer itself is a source of EMF signals that can be detected many hundreds of feet away. Adding a WiFi signal to the mix that surrounds us is trivial.

The error message appears in the dock's print dialog box entitled 'Canon MG7700 Series' and reads: 'Searching for Printer'.

The printing preferences pane always retains the Canon drivers and reads, on clicking +,

Canon MG7700 Series USB
Canon MG7700 Series Scanner

A possible solution might be to shut down the MacBook fully at the end of each day's work and boot up fresh in the morning. Then the printer seems to be detected without going through the print-system reset palaver. Allowing the MacBook to hang (close the lid), or self-shut-down due to low battery, both seem to lose the communication link to the printer.

I noticed similar 'stall' problems with my previous HP C8180 All-in-one (same MacBook) but I never had to reset the print system; at worst a reboot got the print queue going but that was pre-MacOS Sierra! Snow Leopard and Mavericks seemed more stable in that regard.

OK.

Do I understand correctly that your Canon Pixma MG7751 Multifunction Printer is connected via USB??

I'm also wondering if that is so, if it might help fix things if it was setup as a wireless (air print) printer.

EDIT:
I gather you live or bought that Canon Pixma MG7751 Multifunction Printer in the UK or Europe as it's not listed at the N.A. Canon sites, nor can I find if it supports Air Print or some other wireless method.

Currently using USB cable to printer; I prefer cabled connections to avoid spurious wireless signals but I'll try 'Wireless LAN Setup' as an experiment to see if it cures the print-queue stalling.

Options on the printer are: Cableless setup, Standard setup, WPS (push button method), Other setup. My Virgin Media router has a WPS button. Of course the MacBook Pro has Airport Utility if that's any help.

Which method would you recommend of the 4 that Canon offers? If WPS, do I hit the router button or the printer setup first? Thanks.

I set up wireless printing using the WPS method and the stalled print queue completed.

I currently have 5.0 GHz and 2.4 GHZ frequencies activated on my 'Super Hub' router and would like to switch one off. I know how to do this via 192.168.0.1 . Each frequency also has options for 54, 144/217 and 300/450 Mbps speeds (each one optimal for speed, range, or both). I am not using WiFi for my Mac, only the printer. Not sure which frequency the printer locked onto but I can always get it to rescan. There are also options for 'Greenfield Mode' and 'Enable OBSS' -- best on or off?

My printer is right next to the router so which frequency and speed options would be best to minimise frequency effects? Speed is unimportant. The techie from Virgin Media is sending me a complimentary new router in case this 4-year-old model has any issues. Thanks again.

The specs for similar Canon printers that I can find for wireless use say they support and use:
- Wireless LAN b/g/n
- Frequency Band: 2.4GHz
Channel: 1 - 13
Range: Indoor 50m (depends on the transmission speed and conditions)
Security: WEP64 / 128bit, WPA-PSK (TKIP / AES), WPA2-PSK (TKIP / AES)
- Channel: 1-11 or 1-13
* Frequency bandwidth and available channels differ depending on country or region.

PS: I don't know what other wireless devices you use or what frequencies they might need or use. ;D

Yeah, there is no "best" channel, just find a channel that isn't being used by somebody nearby. Or, just pick one and see if it works. If yes, done, if not, pick another. Repeat until you get a good connection.

Not so fast ... my scanner is not WiFi'd yet ...

Is the scanner function supposed to be linked by WiFi as part of the print setup? I just had to plug the USB back in to scan a document to my Mac. Am I supposed to turn the WiFi on the top screen bar 'ON'?

Are there any easy instructions for setting up the scanner wirelessly? Thanks again.
