OK results of a not very scientific test. Using a 5M powered USB extension plus 3 x 1M USB extension cables plus a final 1.5M USB to Mini USB cable ( 9.5M in total 31 ft ) i connected my 1Dslll to my early 2010 unibody MacBook Pro.

Using the Canon software I was able to control the camera, using the controls within the utility software. Camera and MPB behaved fine without any problems over the short ( 30min) test period. All files transmitted fine ( All Shot in RAW so fairly karge ones ) and camera controls operated normally. Either from the laptop or the camera. No drops or other errors.

Now connecting 5 cables s I did was not the best way to attempt this but I thought if this works then a single 5M extension on the powered USB extension should be fine. (Couldn't try that as it's connected to one of my printers and it's run in trunking and would be a bit of a pain to remove and re thread, ).

MPB running OSX 10.6.8.

Craig

I don't know if this helps ( probably not) , but I don't seem to have a problem with my MPB with long cables and tethered shooting. I also forgot how good the Canon software is at remotely controlling cameras.

Thanks for running your test. May I ask what brand of active cable you are using? I've tried two, Belkin and Sewell.

Not sure why my late 2010 MBP had problems but I returned it so I can't troubleshoot. I got the 2011' because a test in the store showed they worked. Oh well, but thanks.

Yes EOS Capture is pretty good, but I prefer Breeze DSLR Remote Pro.

I'm a long time Phase Once C1 pro user and it has a pretty good tethered shooting interface but I don't use it because it only records to the computer. I prefer to save to both the card and computer. Just makes me feel better.
