Can I use an Apple phone charger to charge bluetooth headphones or should I charge them from my iMac?

For some reason Apple Support won't allow me to post this in their forums.

Hi Gren - you should provide some more information, e.g. what brand/model BT headphones are you using, how does its charger plug in (my assumption is via a mini-USB jack or proprietary connection), and what are the charging needs, i.e. Wattage (will be Volts x Amps - my BT HP is 5 V x 0.5 Amps) - also, did you receive a charging cable/adapter w/ the headphones and is the other end a standard USB connector?

The iPhone charger is typically 5V x 1A (i.e. 5W - iPads use the same voltage but twice the amperage) - if your headphones are rated to handle those amounts, then should not be an issue; also, despite the ratings, many of the devices can be charged using higher amperage (I have my wife charge her iPhone on a dual-2A AC adapter - charges much faster). As to your iMac's USB ports, you need to tell us the model/year of your computer along w/ the USB version - the power output from these ports varies and older ones do not work effectively charge iPads; again, I assume your headphones need less charging wattage. Dave :)

Hi there, the model is AKG Y45BT and is rated at 5V x 1A like yours, it came with a USB to Mini USB charging cable.

My iMac is a 2011 27" and I think it's USB 2.0. I hope that info is sufficient, thanks.

Well, the power needs of your headphones match those of the iPhone charger, so I seen no problem in using the cable provided w/ that charger (or any other w/ the same ratings); now, if you have more powerful chargers, such as those for an iPad (i.e. 5V x 2.0 or 2.4A), then you might want to check w/ the manufacturer's website to see if the headphones can be safely charged w/ the more powerful amperage device(s) - most of these modern electronics have built-in safety features that permit faster charging, but always good to check first. Good luck - Dave :)

Thanks Dave, I think I'll play safe and use the iPhone charger with the AKG cable. Much obliged.
