I know that when you activate your mac in safe mode it disabled sound and all unnecessary drivers but I'm wondering if theres a way to install the sound kext while in safe mode?

G'day and welcome to the forums.

I think it would be unwise to install or activate anything whilst booted under Safe Mode. It would help a lot if you supplied the mdoel of your Mac and the operating system as I have read an external USB Sound Card can be the answer subject to Mac drivers working. I will do a Google and see what I can find, posting anything below.

just another question but why would it be unwise to install a kext in safe mode? would it do anything that would be irreversible to the computer?

I'm going to look into a usb sound card if it doesn't work

Probably not. Why using Safe Mode? Does your MBP have boot or hardware problems? I have been nusing Macs since 1990 and with well over twenty diverse models, have used Safe Mode once when a Kingston SSD failed.

Why using Safe Mode?

That would be a good #1 question.

And
can you activate the sound kext
when using it would be another #2 question I'd suggest.

Why…???

I would have to say that would seem to be some sort of software OS conflict and NOT hardware or logic board related.

Do a clean install and add no extra apps. Then when it is working well, add one at a time until you have the problem. I know, I know some folks use literally dozens of apps, but the rule is the more apps the more problems. Any idea why the sound is not working? Often it is a jack broken off in the sound out connection for externals, or maybe incorrest system preferences set up. Have you ever ran Recovery Mode over the Mac? Start up in Command and R, go to Utilities and run Disk First Aid and see what is reported.. Next option is to tke it to a Genius Bar or Apple Store for a free diagnosis. often if Safe Mode works it can be restored.

For old Mac users, remember how we used to disable extensions loading, and adding a few at a time until the problem reared its ugly head and was isolated?

Have you had a look at Activity Monitor and your Console logs and see if you can see anything that might be related to or causing the problem?

What happens if you create a new user and then log out and then Log In as the new user???

My understanding is their sound works OK when booted normally but then they get some crashing conflict, so that should dispel any mechanical connection problem.
