Hey there. I have a very unusual problem to which I can't find the cause or a solution. I noticed at first that when I am using the desktop WhatsApp app on my Macbook Pro 16" 2019 (Intel), when I type the letter 'c' the chat I am typing is quits. WhatsApp stays open. Finally I figured out the pressing the esc key resolves this, and I can carry on.
Lately I have notices that drop-down menus, such at clicking on the apple to access system preference, seem to be affected as well. When I click on the menu, it appears briefly but does not stay on screen. Again, pressing the esc key seems to resolve this.
At some point the problem returns, but I'm at at loss why...
My Macbook has recently had the OS reinstalled and I am now on Sonoma 14.7, but the problem was there before the reinstall, and on Monterey.
Thank you!

A warm welcome to Mac-Forums. Thank you for your post.

In my Mac and other devices, when using WhatsApp, typing "c" does nothing other than print the letter.

If I type "esc", it closes the message, BUT, if you open it up again, whatever typing there was, is retained.

Similarly, Clicking on the Apple icon , I get a Dropdown list. I can get System Settings, no problem, and if I Click on "Recent Items" it shows me a whole list of things I have recently opened.

I fully realise that telling you this is no help to you at all; but it does suggest that you may have, in the past, altered the actions of the various Keys.

For example, if I type "@" twice, that prints my email address and I have created other shortcut abbreviations.

Is it possible that you changed the "reaction or meaning" of certain keys on your Keyboard? (System Settings > Keyboard) - various options there.

How do you get WhatsApp on your Mac? It's a phone app...

Lately I have notices that drop-down menus, such at clicking on the apple to access system preference, seem to be affected as well.

When certain keyboard keys to strange and different things especially when different applications and software is used, is often a case of a swollen battery if you're particular MacBook model is prone to the problem.

This swelling battery may be pressing on the keyboard cable that can cause the problem. Maybe yours is so effective?

Just the thought of a possibility and welcome to mac-forums.
