I have burnt 2 music cd-r's and they are NOT being read by a CD player. My OS is Yosemite. Why doesn't a CD player read these discs? What do I need to do to correct this?

Depends on whether the CD player accepts homemade CDs. How old is it?

I guess the real question is what format needs to be used when downloading music to burn so it will play on a CD player. I downloaded mp3 files. What should I be using?

If you downloaded MP3 files, you'll need a CD player that can play them. Your Mac can play them if it has a built in optical disk drive. However, most home players or car stereos can not play MP3 files. Some can, so you would need to check first. Otherwise you could convert them to audio which will take up much more space on a CD.

@ Lanita.... - agree w/ the above; I burn several MP3 CD-Rs a month (purchased music from various sites) using iTunes w/ the setting shown below on the screen capture, so make sure if are using iTunes that the setting is correct.

My current CD & BD players are recent models and can play MP3 discs (the music is simply stored on the disc as files) - even my cheap boombox can play the burnt discs; my previous machines could not nor my old car's CD player - my assumption is that your equipment is not compatible. Dave :)
