Hi all,

Hope I'm posting this in the right place.

I have just bought a new Macbook air to replace my late 2007 Macbook. I was thinking of transferring my data via time machine but also wondered if it was possible to remove the Hard Disk from the Macbook, put it in an enclosure an then boot up the Macbook Air using this. In theory, run my Macbook via my Macbook Air.

Hope this makes sense and any advice would be gratefully received.

Cheers

Rob

Depends what OS version is on the 2007 MacBook HD.

Does not make sense. A 2007 model would be streets slower than a new MBA and slow it down.

The old Macbook is running either Lion or Mountain Lion (not entirely sure which).

The reason I wanted to try to do this is that I want to access some photos, documents etc on the old Macbook without transferring them via time machine to the new MacBook Air.

My charger has packed up for the MacBook and as far as I can tell i can't find an adaptor to go MagSafe 2 to MagSafe 1.

If all else fails I'll buy a new charger. Just thought this might be away round it.

Cheers

All you want to do is access your data on the old drive right? Remove the hard drive from the old macbook, put it in an external usb hard drive enclosure, attach it to your new Macbook AIr through a usb port on the Air and access it like any other external drive. You just boot the Air using it's own SSD and version of OS X. No need to boot the old OS on the old hard drive.

The old Macbook is running either Lion or Mountain Lion (not entirely sure which).

If you got a brand new 2014 MacBook Air…the oldest OS version it can run is 10.9. So if the MacBook HD has 10.7 (Lion) or 10.8 (Mountain Lion) on it…then the 2014 MacBook Air would not be able to boot from that HD.

In theory, run my Macbook via my Macbook Air.

Took it you wanted to run permanently that way and as Nick said 'No go'.
