Something rested on my keyboard and now screen is blank apart from cursor arrow. How do I restore screen?

We're going to need a bit more information to help? What Mac is this (machine specs and OS version)? Also, what was happening at the time (machine asleep etc) and what exactly does the screen look like now?

Machine was asleep and screen is black (can brighten or dim) with cursor arrow on screen
