Awful connection to WiFi after upgrade to Yosemite. Coincidence?

Hi.

I upgraded to Yosemite three weeks ago and it may be a coincidence but my internet connection on my MacBookPro has suffered badly such that I have to sit almost upon the router.

Owning other internet enabled devices, I know the BT router is AOK.

Is this a common issue or is it likely coincidence as it seems to be getting worse?

If this is a coincidence, can you recommend and way to go about resolving this problem as all else on the MBPro is fine?

It's no coincidence. WiFi problems have been the subject of contention for many Mac owners who upgraded to Yosemite. The 10.10.1 update was supposed to address and rectify WiFi problems, however, according to Macworld and several others, it hasn't. Look for Apple to address this again with 10.10.2 whenever that update is released.

Wi-Fi connections are greyed out on Yosemite

So my Wi-Fi problem might be connected (no pun intended) with Yosemite?
My 2014 iMac connects to my Wi-Fi, but the 3 possible connections (one to a Virgin Router and 2 to an Apple Time Machine) are greyed out, although they still seem to work fairly well. I am sure they used to be black!. Why?

Half an hour later.....
(I no longer have this problem... 10.10.2 has solved it....)

I just checked UPDATES on the Appstore, and 10.10.2 was there.
I upgraded to it and my problem has disappeared!
The menus are back in black again!

I dont have that update mentioned below but here is something that worked for me when I first upgraded to Yosemite.
Go to Network Preferences (menu under WiFi) symbol on menu bar. Change Location to Automatic and give your Network a new name.
This worked for me but my problem may not have been the same. Fatamorgana seems to have had some connectivity fixed by the OSX update but this might work for you.

Thank you, Rod. Now I have 10.10.2 it all seems ok again, but I'll bear your reply in mind if the problems return!

Glad to hear it, not sure where my 10.10.2 update is but then I didn't have a problem so I guess I can wait.

Has OS 10.10.2 actually been released? I asked Lisa this question last week or so when she quoted OS 10.10.2.

Certainly Down Under today is January 26, and no updates here?

Actually, that was a typo on my part....I did try to clarify that. The beta is out for those who are testing it. I have not seen it in the App store yet.

I had to change my home router firewall to a low setting which restricts next to nothing to get my wifi issues solved. But at work where we run a hefty firewall (phantom) I have not had any issues. Go figure.

Just the opposite for me, selected 5GHz band solely on my dual band TP-Link router and stopped all problems with interference from hands free phones etc.

I know just what you mean. Most people do not realize their home phone with those very useful wireless handhelds can cause all kinds of problems. I have seen a couple of home networks where hand free phones caused dropped internet connections for the computers in the home.

I usually change the channel on the 2.4Mhz setting and that can fix the issue. Most home network routers are set to automatic. I use a channel scanner to see who is using what and then move the router to the most unoccupied channel I can find.

That's absolutely correct...I have 2 Macs, a 2014 iMac running the Beta Yosemite, and a 2011 Macbook Pro running the official Yosemite.
My problems with 10.10.1 were on the iMac and I was able to upgrade to 10.10.2 Beta which solved all my WiFi problems and really seemed to speed my machine up.
My Macbook Pro with the official 10.10.1 seems pretty much ok but I will install 10.10.2 when it becomes available.
This is a good forum...so many interested folk on here! I hadn't used it before, but I will now!

vintageaxeman, I glad to hear it, no real problems with my Yosemite but now I'm looking forward to the update (as soon as it's available) here. Could download the beta but now that I'm running 10.10.1 on my main computer there's hardly any point.

As one of the testers of 10.10.2 they are still releasing test updates and asking us to check WiFi. So hang in there. I have a feeling the public 10.10.2 update will be out very soon.

I have to just about sit on top on my router for a connection, either at home or away.
I'm running Yosemite at the most recent edition.

Not sure if I can help but I definitely need more information. What model and year is your mac. And you are using 10.10.5 - correct? Did the problem start with maybe the upgrade to Yosemite? Any other information to help figure out what could be the issue would be appreciated.
