.avi file problem

i have a .avi file that i want to watch but a screen pops up with the message:
You may experience problems playing a video track in"001.avi" because the required compressor could not be found. Would you like to close the movie or continue?

Do I have to download other software to make it work? If I do, where? Thanx....

Go to Macupdate and get Divx Doctor. Run it through that and it will save it as a Quicktime .mov movie.
Or play it in Mplayer or VLC.

thanx, i downloaded divx doctor and converted the avi file to mov. The problem now i am running into is I only get sound and no image. Am I suppose to get another software for the image???? Thanx.

There's a couple of codecs you need.
goto http://www.3ivx.com/
and http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
That should do it. If not you have some kind of weird Windows codec in the movie.

Also you might try: http://aldorandenet.free.fr/codecs/
