Auto start Mail in a Minimized state?

If by auto start you mean when you log in mail starts and is hidden, then yes.

Goto Apple Menu, System Preferences, Accounts, select your log in, click the Login Items tab, add mail, make sure there is a check mark next to it so it hides. Done.

But if you mean just when you open mail, I don't know about that...

for me this is not working...
my mac is 10.4...
the Mail starts in a window... not hidden.

Bad news I'm afraid.
The hide option in Mail @ log on finally started working the way it should in Snow Leopard.
