Apps/Downloads For Macbook Pro

Can you download programs like VLC media player from CNET.com? I wasn't sure if you could only download things for the Macbook Pro from the app store, any other useful apps/software/programs I should have?

You are not limited to the App Store but it has a nice feature that lets you know if there is
an upgrade and list all your third party apps besides knowing they are compatible.
If its not on the App Store I usually go straight to the vendor.
