Your Mac's Specs
PowerMac G4 867MHz 1.25GB 60GB+80GB DVDRW Zip250 Leopard
PowerPC 7100/66
Mac OS 7.5.5
Connected to a 10/100 Windows ethernet network via a MacSense Nubus RJ45 ethernet card.
Connected via 3Com 10/100 hub.

TCP/IP Control Panel is okay set to Connect Via Ethernet - slot 3.

The link light is ON on the hub and on the ethernet card.

But when I open the AppleTalk Control Panel and change Connect Via from Printer Port to Ethernet slot 3 the little clock icon (wait) comes up and them the system freezes up.

Any ideas/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

You should of just messaged me as I most likely the only one here thats going to venture into 7.5 and try to answer the ? I think parts of your system are currupt and thats why your having problems. Do have like a Nortons system disc. It has to be the 1997 version for 7.5. You need to run the Norton utilities and repair the Btree Etc. If not that a clean reinstall of OS 7.5. Like I said before all this should work with out any problems if the systems 100%. There may be some other extension thats hanging the system. Go into the extensions Manager and turn off any thing you do not use. Adobe font manager was really good at freezing the system as I recall.

Hello again!
Thank you for your response.

To tell the truth I didn't want tp bpther you as I took up a lot of your time on my last thread.

As you know, I was able to connect via the ethernet card before and see the Win server but I don't know what I did to mess that up.

I inherited this machine and it has a lot of software installed. In the Utilities folder there is a folder containing Norton Utilities and Norton Tools.

I don't know what you mean by Btree etc. or which NU's to run.

I did download 19 diskettes of OS 7.5.3 and the 7.5.5 update from the Apple site but have never done a clean install or backed up all the files on HDD.

I am such a Mac newbie and need step-by-step hand-hilding.

I ran Norton Disk Doctor and it said that there was a problem that the volume bit map didn't match the catalog and gave me the option to fix it. I'll go fix it now and *** I don't screw up something else.

You hit me with to much stuff at once...The norton disk doctor is great..it works better from a cd..but you have it on the drive that good.. Run disk doc. more than once. Repair every thing it finds. I want you to rebuild the desktop. To do this restart and hold down the Shift key until Extensions off appear then press apple logo key and option key at the same time until you get a message if you want to rebuild the desk top. click ok. (You have to fast with your fingers on the keys before the HD starts up)

If you high lite a program icon and pull down the file menu in the list is Get Info. Also you can increase the memory for and application.

Go to the memory control panel and make sure virtual memory is on.

Dont worry abot the start up floppies for now. If Nortons works you should be OK.

When did you last change the battery in this machine..with a dead battery when you unplug it ..its going back to defalt in the Appletalk control panel to modem. This MS server your trying to connect to...is it for the broadband internet connection or to share files. If to share you need some kind of Netware on the Mac. Once the connection is made you open the Chooser ( Desktop Apple logo left top ..click pull down pick chooser look for Server icon) The directories appear on the desktop. Because of this MS server set up I going to send you to here View forum - NuBus Power Mac, LC & Performa – 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Forums

Thats a Norton Ulilities floppy to make an emergency disk repair. A ture start up floppy will boot before the Hard drive. If a floppy dose not boot is has no system on it. You really have no need for it if you run Nortons Disk Doctor every 2 months or so.

I just put a brand new batter in a couple of weeks ago.

The MS Server 2003 R2 has a directory called MS UAM Volume (User Authentication Module) for connecting to macs. I installed the MS UAM client on the on the 7100 so that's all I need to qaccess the server.

Thanks for the referral - I'll check it out.

btw: I'm in norrthern California.
Where are you?

Joe

Thanks.

I re-built the desktop and restarted.

The Connectix RAM Doubler didn't load because virtual memory was ON. It told me to turn it off.

AppleTalk still hung up trying to go to the ethernet card.

Sorry didnt know you had Ram Doubler. Theres an extension most likely a 3rd party one thats hanging the system. You dont have Conflict Catcher On there somewhere? that will fix it. You are using Open Transport? Right....Go in the system folder find MacTCP DNR file and put it in the trash. Restart. Do not empty the trash just hold it there and try to connect to the network.

If you get no joy..I want you Zap the Pram. Simultaneously hold down Command-Option-P-R keys at the same time. Wait until the Mac chimes again and restarts a second time.

Next.. Start with extensions Off..Hold down Shift key at start up. Go into the Preferences file find the Finder Preferences folder and drag it to the trash ..restart the machine. The system will create a new file.

Okay, I did all that and NO GO,
Put MacTCP and Finder Preferences in trash, (The system did create a new one).
Zapped the PRAM. I was once told to hold down those keys for 3 chimes so that's what I did.

I downloaded ConflictCatcher 9 and burned it to a CD.
Now the 7100 doesn't read from the SCSI CD drive,

GEEEZ!!!! :(

btw: which is the better option, virtual memory or RAM Doubler?

You would need like CC 8 thats for 7.5 -8x. Any way I think you either got a system issue or a bad ethernet card. If you had Maxed memory 136 MB (72 pin DRAM SIMMs installed in pairs, Required.) I would not use Ram Doubler. Can cause problems and will not work if you upgrade the OS.

When you download stuff for these old Macs on a PC. Do not unzip it on the PC ,burn it as it is to the CD. You Mac will use Unstuffit to decompress the file. Also download the version for the OS your using. Nothing for Ten will work on your Mac.

Thanks!

It's a brand new card that I just bought. And it did work awhile ago. I don't know what I did to cause the current problem with it. The Ready and Link lights are ON.,

I only have 16MB of real memory. I don't know about the other specs you mentioned.

I have been downloading for OS 7.5 and don't plan on upgrading the OS. I have enough $ ib this already.

Thanks for the tip -- I have been burning the downloaded files and unstuffing them on the Mac.

What do I do with the MacTCP DNR and Finder Preferences we put in the trash?

If it is a system issue shoukd I do a clean install with the 19 diskettes I downloaded from Apple?

My fear is installing a new system with the downloads you may have a problem and all will be lost. Are you going to try to make Diskettes or burn them to a CD.

Right now I have them on 19 floppies but I could burn them to CD if you tell me how.

I made an important discovery at 4am this morning. The carf is a combo card (BNC and RJ45) there is a jumper that I set to RJ45 and now AppleTalk can be set without freezing up. It's a mystery how I connected to the server before.

I switched back to RAM Doubler and switched back to Classic Networking. Still can;t connect to the server though.

Progress????

I spoke too soon. Freezing up again.

GEEZ....
