See, the main thing with ipods and mp3 players is the capacity. I'll be getting a mini ipod when they get released over here, that will hold more than enough tracks for me wherever i go, i cant always take my powerbook around with me. That samsung player looks good, but 256mb storage doesnt cut it for me.

I'm sorry but I can’t find the point in get an ipod mini when if you pay $50 (us) more you can get a regular ipod. Especially now that the new ipod are 20 gigs for $300 and have gotten even smaller. I am not trying to be meant but I can’t find the point.

the problem ist, that it would never bee that small.
why??
how the **** would you controll a microPod of the size of a poststamp??
:)
perhaps a bluetooth controller?
the microPod has a bluetooth modul, and the headphones and the display and controll buttons are another device. also with bluetooth.
means, you can put you microPod somewhere secure, and just take take the headphones outside. nobody could steal you micropod.
and if a call's coming in, you just pause, and recieve the call. :)

Those drives are already being used in the iPod Mini.

http://www.macnn.com/news/22444
Toshiba will unveil a new mini hard drive that measures less than an inch across at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next month, according to CNET News.com: "The drive, about the same size as a quarter, will go inside MP3 players, set-top boxes and other consumer-electronic goods... The capacity of the new drive is not yet known, but Hitachi and others currently sell 1-inch diameter hard drives that can hold 1GB to 4GB of data. Toshiba was the first major manufacturer to come out with a 1.8-inch drive, which can now hold up to 40GB of data. Apple, in fact, uses Toshiba drives in the iPod and enjoyed almost a complete monopoly on the supply of these drives for about a year...Competition in that market, however, has been heating up. Hitachi came out with its first 1.8-inch drive in November, and Dell adopted it in its Digital Jukebox."

Hey Apple, you have the standard iPod thats really Cool and the Mini iPod that's Hot! How about a Micro iPod to complete the range, it'll be scorching hot!

Imagine, a digital device, one that we could wear similar to a digital MP3 player. Utilising Toshibia's 0.85 Inch HD?

Well you just don't have the same priorities as an iPod mini buyer. An iPod mini buyer obviously puts a lot of weight on size, style, and color options, over what you and I would normally weigh as the top priority, being size of the hd.

I can smell BS....I'm gonna make you eat your words. :D

Actually h0tk4rl, they don't use this tiny drive that i'm talking about... They do however, do use the Hitachi MicroDrive in the iPod Mini series and here's photographic proof.

Warning: Not for the faint hearted, die hard iPod lover.
Forget smashing your iPod to bits to discover the truth that lies behind that shiny case. more here...

The standard iPod (G1- G4) uses the Toshiba mini drive, it appears like a PC card form factor with slightly different pin-outs. How i know? Because i disassembled my iPod, after the battery failed to charge. It too doesn't use the new micro drive.

I'll post images when i find some. :D

You remember the Panasonic Personal Stereos? They did everything from a single button. It was like:

. to play (quick tap)
.. forward a track (two quick taps)
... back a track (three quick taps)
_ stop (press and hold)

Add a mini hold switch for disabling the operation button. A high resolution dot matrix display (approx 12mm by 30mm and scroll all the track data over 2 lines.) And maybe a mode button to access other features. How does that sounds?

Would it be possible? Sure.

Well... The original Sony Playstation was originally made with 32 different chips, minus the memory (I counted). Then when they integrated PS compatibility into the PS2 and the PSX, they manages to redesign the whole Playstation into ONE chip. Anything is possible with 90nm technology, the question you should be askin: "What would you use to power this sucker... and would it to make it worth while?"

Next thing would be "How to market the thing..." well Apple is always great at that.

so where would one plug a fw cord in? + room for headphones? :D there is a limit to size.

Maybe a sub-miniature connector for data and power, standard slim-line stereo jack as found in Walkman's or the normal jack and remote found on current iPods. Maybe one should sketch a prototype....
