Man there are a lot of people around here on that boat :(

The way I look at it, is that I had it for 2 months, so it was worth it. It isn't my main machine, so I guess I have that luxury.

I was reading somewhere yesterday, and somebody had made this point. If your iBook was good enough that you bought it and used it, then just because Apple released a newer model, does that make your current iBook not great any more?

I would have to say no.

Hmm... thanks Schweb and Emrys for putting my feet back on the ground. I guess you both made valid points...

Emrys and I also have G3 iBooks and I really don't think you'll be too disappointed. I really don't think there will be a noticeable difference at all except maybe in Photoshop, etc. Besides the G3 is much better on power usage and heat so you haven't really lost out on anything :)
Seriously? I am thinking of getting an iBook for my uni work. I am going to go into Computional Physics which uses alot of UNIX programs. I was given the impression that OSX have really good support for such programs. Plus I heard that Apple gives out FREE developer kit that can be used to compile most standard programming languages (I think I will be using mainly C++). Do you guys think iBook will be a good call to make? I think my work will include image analysis and some intense number crunching. I might up the memory to 512mb as soon as I get my hands on the it but do you guys think G4-933 will be enough for the job?

In a way, I agree with Emrys here. I guess this kind of thing happens everytime a new upgrade is released. There is nothing much you can do about that! I suppose you can count the upgrade period and predict when a company is going to upgrade but I am not sure how you can do that. I almost had a similar experience when I brought my first computer, I was about to get an Amiga about 6 months before it was phased out! I would have been kicking myself then! Instead I got a PC. (Some would argue that I have only stayed in the frying pan and not jumped into the fire!)

You can run most UNIX apps in OS X, with the X11 support installed. And you can pretty much develop and compile anything you want with C++, as the Developer tools come with GCC.

So you would be all set.
