Apple Readies Dramatic Software Overhaul for iPhone, iPad and Mac

"The revamp — due later this year — will fundamentally change the look of the operating systems and make Apple’s various software platforms more consistent, according to people familiar with the effort. That includes updating the style of icons, menus, apps, windows and system buttons."

It is about time Apple created the OS. 1 OS to run them all. I thought this would have happened a long time ago, when iOS 10 was about to be released.

According to the article that I cited, that isn't at all what Apple is doing. A quote:

"Still, Apple is stopping short of merging its operating systems — a step other tech giants have taken. The company believes it can make better Macs and iPads by keeping their operating systems separate. "

Apple realizes that each category of device (iPhone, iPad, and Macintosh) requires it's own OS that is appropriate for that sort of device. However, it is in everybody's best interests (both Apple's and their customer's) if going from one device to the other is as seamless and as familiar as possible.

Basically Apple is hoping to entice the many many users of the iPhone to buy and use Apple's other devices because they will all be part of a recognizable Apple ecosystem offering a somewhat familiar experience, and interoperating seamlessly.

if they can pull that off really well I think that’s the best approach. Lots of folks seem to be afraid that they are going to create some kind of hybrid OS that doesn’t do anything well.
