Has Applecare paid for itself in my household, I'd say it's an easy yes, some computers require none to more component replacements than others. I had two macs that didn't need Applecare at all; however, the one totally bit the dust with its logic board after the warranty.
Well, if it's any comfort, my nearly 3 year old and my 6 year old, who are incidentally systematically destroying the interior of my home,

Oh, please elaborate on this! lol

Unfortunately, I'm willing to bet people just tuck away the TechTool Deluxe software or lose it. I'm sure Apple has some figures on how often the software gets used. Seems as if Apple is cutting a lot of costs on debatable additions and trying to gain more in every way.

You should check your credit card company also. For example Amex covers accidental loss or damage as well as some other really interesting stuff that I doubt most people realize. I had an LCD TV replaced when there was a Wii accident and candle wax went all over the screen :)

Other card companies may offer something similar.

Also, most credit cards will automatically double the manufacturer's warranty for up to an additional year.
My mom loves her Amex credit card, she always uses it for high priced electronic items. I wouldn't mind getting one in the future.

I've only used TTD a few times, and I'm sure I've probably lost money on my Applecare agreements over the years, though I have used them, once with a MBP screen and another time a keyboard and a couple of optical drive replacements in imacs. Overall, it's still good peace of mind.

As for accidental damage/theft/loss, you might also check on the cost of adding computers (especially laptops) to you homeowners or renters policy under a personal articles rider.

This is a very good idea depending of course on who your insurer is. I have a rider policy separately scheduling certain high value items. The cost for these types of policies is usually much less than buying accidental damage or theft insurance.
