They wouldn't make it just a pure read only drive. If anything, they'd have to integrate DVD-R and BlueRay Read only, which could get expensive as 3 posts above stated. It would be silly to change from burning abilities to no burning abilities just because a few people want to watch a little better quality movies.

Apple wants Blu Ray

According to an engadget Rumor I read a couple of months ago, Apple wanted to put blu ray drives into the macbook pro during the last refresh but were unable to get the drives they wanted from Sony. Hopefully they will be able to get them, I am waiting to buy a Macbook Pro until I can get it with bluray built in. (My white macbook will have to do for now)

Here is the link to the article on engadget I read. Hopefully it is true, but you never know with Apple rumors.

That's what I meant, a CD/DVD-RW Superdrive that would also read BRD's, but not burn to them.

i think being able to read all dvd formats would be nice. i could really care less about burning anything. in todays world why do you really need to burn discs at all?

1980's to mid 90's - i made tapes vhs for movies and cassettes for audio (ahh those were the days) :)

mid 90's to early 2000's - i made dvd's and cd's

today and on - i watch movies on my computer (connected to large lcd tv) and music is all mp3 players

in the year and a half i have had this macbook i think i may have put a cd or dvd in it less than 10 x's

i used my home imac to rip all my dvd's a long time ago and sold them all back to a second hand store and and now 99.9% of everything i need i get via the web whether it is music, movies, or software.

having at least one cd/dvd/blueray drive on your system to me is plenty and to be honest i would prefer to have no cd/dvd/blueray drive at all on my portable mac's and have that weight and space used for memory, hdd space, or better performing processors.

the mac air i believe is the right idea, you can either have an external drive or use an existing one from a stationary home machine. unfortunately for me they are waaaayyyy too far of the mark with hdd space on the air for it to be a usefull machine for me.

to me disc's of any kind are becoming more and more like cassettes were in the 90's and i am not missing them at all.

i guess if you didnt have apple tv or a 360 or a ps3 or a video out cable for your ipod, or any of the many other movie viewing options for your tv then you would need to have a dvd player to watch something but if that were the case you are probably not reading and posting here and dont really care about any of this talk anyway.

I don't have apple tv, a 360, a ps3, and I lost my iPod. But if I did use a video out, the quality is no where near as good as plugging a DVD. And people still use computers to burn movies/music to hand out to their friends and family. Discs are a great media device that are portable and easy to use for everyone, very compatible in today's world.

My Super Drive broke a few weeks ago and I've not missed it... I don't really burn DVDs very much at all, maybe every few months when there's no other option. So I'm not that fussed. It'd be nice to have a DVD burner, but blu ray doesn't interest me that much. I do it all online. It'd drive me nuts burning a DVD whenever I want to watch something on a bigger screen.

i also thought that i should mention that in the rare event i have to burn a cd/dvd i always use my external Memorex drive connected to my iMac because mac's burn so sssslllllloooooowwww. my iMac is like 3 months old so it has the latest burner in it and i can burn 2 disc on the external before the superdrive is finished.

im not actually posting that to complain but i have found it odd that all my apple computers burn and rip so slow and none of them are more than 1.5 years old so they are not old hardware?

anyway i just hope the newly designed macbook comes out soon because i am starting to get anxious for a new one. i cant stick with anything past 2 years. i dont think i have a major piece of electronics that is older than 2 years since they are always making things better so fast.

my friends love me that get my hand me downs :)

I'm considering buying a MBP but I'm not sure if to hold out with all these rumours. I could wait as long as the end of August but I'm impatient and would love to do some web design on it over the summer before uni starts again.

Do you think I should hold out for the conference and then buy if there's no news or just go ahead and buy one now. If it's the latter it's whether I want to wait two weeks for a 7200rpm MBP to be delivered or pop down to the store and buy an ordinary one tomorrow.

Thanks.

Actually I've compared burn speeds between my C2D white imac and my uncle's alu imac. And my imac burns at least 2 times as fast as best setting in toast. I don't know why. But for all other purposes both drives work fast and equally as each other.

my intel imac does seem to burn faster than my black macbooks superdrive but neither of them compare to the speeds i get on the imac when i use the external memorex burner.

i realize the memorex just flat out had faster burning speeds but i have always wondered why apple doest use they faster drives in their systems. its not like they have been out long enough to know they work.

apple superdrive = Writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed and Writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed

external memorex = Writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 16x and Writes CD-R discs at up to 52x speed

Will they decrease the thickness of the MBP ? Because I'm planning to buy a Macbook Air as a secondary notebook but if they will redesign the MBP and make it thinner and lighter, I'II probably buy a MBP.

I don't know, a thinner MBP may detract from the attractiveness of the MBA, especially since they're nearly the same price, but the performance difference is huge.

IMAC 20"!! WOOH YEAH!! 2gb ram - 250gb hd 2.16ghz core 2 duo
I don't want a thinner MBP, the MBA freaks me out, also - It would probably make it so slowww and that is not what pro customers want, in fact pro customers probably have a car so there is no fuss at all!

True, but if I had the money for either a car or a MBP, I'd be walking!

Actually, I chose my MacBook over driving lessons...
