I do agree with you that the days on the home desktop computer are numbered. I see computers in the future being one of the following only:

1. Massive server farms. As in ISPs or "The Cloud" where all your data is stored.
2. Notebooks. Be them ultra portables or desktop replacements.
3. Touchpad computers. What the ipad/iphone will become in the future and this idea will replace netbooks and our concept of them. With small Hard Drives as most of their data is stored in the cloud.

So I think Apple is the first to slowly be realising this possible future and is slowly taking the steps towards it so they are not left out in the cold when this future is eventually upon us.
