The Beatles, Worms, Viruses, and Trojans. In 1987, when university professor Fred Cohen asked the USA’s National Science Foundation for funding to research countermeasures for the (at that time) new phenomenon of so-called “computer viruses,” he was rejected. He was told, “This work is currently of no interest.” From today’s perspective, this verdict seems as […]

Yes in 2019 so nothing new apart from the fact OWC has entered a partnership with Acronis so no doubt will continue to promopte their software. DetectX Swift and Intego's Virus Barrier Scan will do me.

So is this like OWC's solution to an all in one - a CCC like backup and a malware blocker?

I use Acronis for cloning my main drive on my Windows computer. It wasn't until recently it has become a decent product.

I have CCC and run DetectXSwift and Malwarebytes. Not sure I need another app to buy at this point.

Gotta disagree with you here Lisa. I have used Acronis True Image for years on all my Windows computers. And believe me, just like CCC or SuperDuper it has saved my bacon numerous times. Windows especially is vulnerable to all sorts of maladies least of all viruses.

Acronis has always been a good product. Many of us preferred it over Norton Ghost and several other cloners.

What didn't you like about it before?

Over the years it has been glitchy and slow for me. I stuck with it as it came free with the SSD. Just within the last year has it been more stable for me. I had issues with it not finishing a backup and taking forever to complete one. This last update really smoothed it out and it is much faster.

I used Norton Ghost years ago and loved it until Peter Norton sold out to Symantec.

Some thoughts:

- I don't take my advice on Macintosh malware from anyone who is trying to sell me anti-virus software. It goes without saying that they are not unbiased and that they want my money.

- There are over a quarter million people subscribed to this Mac discussion list. How many are posting that they have been verifiably beset by some sort of malicious malware?

- The referenced article quotes someone from Apple making a very nebulous statement about malware for the Mac..in the middle of an anti-trust type trial. I don't think that that statement was intended to be cogent advice on whether I need to be extra concerned about Mac malware. If Apple wanted to tell us that we need more than the anti-malware software that is built-into the Mac OS, I think that they have much better ways to do that.
