Anyone running Vista on a MB yet?

Curious, if anyone has gotten Vista to run on a MB yet. And if so, what's the "Windows Experience Index"?

Vista on a MBP - Anyone?

Sorry for the cross posts between MB and MBP forums. I am on the fence on laptop, and this would really help to know.

If anyone is running Vista on a MBP (or a MB for that matter), I am curious what the "Windows Experience Index" is. Thats a pretty good indicator of how Vista will behave on this platform.

Ok... so here I am posting to my own thread

I have found quite a few reviews on the MBP - seems Vista is running around 4.5+ on the performance rating, pretty dang good for a laptop!

I am still trying to find info on Vista on a regular MB 2.0 C2D.

Very few people are running Vista as it isn't really supported yet. On release of Leopard you will be able to use Vista. However, I was in the Mac Collection store yesterday and they had a MBP running Vista on display. Give it a week for more info, it will run vista without a doubt. People just need time to write the magic codes they write so well.

OMG, pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee pleasseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee don't run microsoft with mac, this can cause permant hard drive failure.. Not to mention defeat the purpose of having a GOOD stable system...

:closed: While I'm not really interested in debating which OS is better or more stable, I am interested why you think Vista would cause permanent hard drive failure? Is there something going on there... a trend of failures?

Nah, just good old fashioned Mac evangelism coupled with a strong dislike of Microsoft products I promise you that Vista will not damage anything permanently or otherwise....

...although I have heard of more than one complaint of compatibility issues, both hardware and software. Give it a few months and MS will get much of this kind of stuff worked out. I recently switched to Mac, but prior to that, I always waited at least a good 6 months from the release of a new OS to let them work out the kinks.

Ok... Compatibility issues are one thing (and I am sure they will be worked out in time)

I have to / want to run Vista and can deal with some issues (I've been on Vista for the last 12 - 18 months... I know how bad it can be )

I was worried that a bad driver of some sort would cause a drive to never shut down or something like that...

I haven't run Vista via Boot Camp, but I HAVE gotten it to run under Parallels, and I have to say that it is SLOW on my Macbook, though that issue will probably be solved if I devote more RAM to it. However, one thing that more RAM won't change is the fact that Aero won't run under virtualization, only natively (i.e. Boot Camp).

feh. i really almost left you negative rep for this. one of the reasons apple themselves opted to put an intel processor in a mac was to be able to run parallels/bootcamp for the ultimate compatibility. windows is a decent, stable, operating system. it just has a few different strengths and weaknesses than OS X. to say it will damage your hard drive is just misleading.

I have Vista running on my MBP. It works for the most part. Sound works and all. Here are some problems I"ve had. The drivers that you put onto the CD through bootcamp will not load completely in Vista. Supposedly u have to install them manually but it doesn't tell me where the drivers were extracted to, thus installing manually is not possible. Another thing is that My wireless does not work while on Vista (I have Vista business btw). The last thing is that when parititioning the drive, I gave Vista 40 gigs, but according to bootcamp anything greater than (either 20 or 30 gigs) makes it an NTFS drive instead of a FAT32 drive meaning while on Mac, I can't copy files INTO my windows driver, i can only read them.

If you have answers for me I would VERY MUCH appreciate it. Vista doesn't really compare to OS X. I used windows my whole life up to a few months ago. Mac is all I will use now. Vista, while a lot nicer than XP, really just seems cluttered. I wouldn't mind getting Vista right away.

Can cause permanent hard drive failure? Wow, no wonder people don't like mac fanboys, making ridiculous claims like that just to keep people away from windows.

As For vista on the MB.

I'm running Vista Ultimate on my macbook. It runs fine, however there are driver problems. Sound can be strange, trackpad doesn't have full functionality, bluetooth and iSight aren't working, and dvd playback is strange for some reason. But it's a functioning laptop, I can access the internet, run Office 2007, run programs all the basic functionality of a computer.

The integrated graphics kill the final score. It's 3.0, the bare requirments for Aero, but it runs fine, and boots faster than OS X.

Sound Card problem on MBP

I'm running Vista Business via Bootcamp on my MBP and it runs fine apart from the lack of sound - reading the posts above it would appear that I'll need to install the driver manually...

As for the overall experience, Vista is clearly a huge improvement on XP in terms of security and usability. It's going to take some time getting used to the changes though so it's way too early to make a proper judgement...

I just ran the drivers CD from Bootcamp and a few errored out .. but that shouldnt matter...
everything works very good so far... (except of bluetooth and isight)
about your hdd question

if your partition is bigger than 32gb then u have to do a NTFS version.
lower than that you can create a FAT partition (but FAT doesnt support anything higher than 32gb)

and yes you can only copy from mac to vista with FAT. so keep your hdd equal to 32gb

I am running Vista Ultimate via bootcamp on my MBP with no problems what so ever. I am using Bootcamp 1.2 which supports Vista, and have yet to encounter any errors. The only complaints that I have are that the under lit keyboard doesn't work, and the F keys do not do their function unless you hold down the function key. It's something to get used to, but it's extra annoying when switching between Windows and OSX.

I have a MBP, just recently installed Vista Home Premium. Its completely smooth, no problems at all. If you use Bootcamp 1.2 with those updated drivers, it shouldn't mess up. My index rating thing is 4.5, so I'm told thats pretty decent. Few old programs I used on XP don't work though, but thats to be expected really. Overall, Vista isn't actually all that, they've copied dashboard...prefer OSX really, more crisp.
