What two devices are you trying to connect? If you're trying to connect a display device via Mini DisplayPort, it won't work, even though the connectors are the same shape.

So if you're plugging in a Mini DisplayPort cable into the Thunderbolt 2 part of the adapter, it won't work.

The goal is to convert/capture Hi8 videotape as digital. I'm using a Sony EV-C100 VCR connected to a Canopus HDVR-110 analog to digital converter, using Hi8 to Hi8 cable. Audio via RCA stereo cables. Output from converter to Mac, using Firewire 400 to 800 cable, with Apple Firewire 800 to TB2 adapter and a TB2 to TB3.

This is attached to a 2019 iMac, which is supposed to supposed to supply the power needed for the digital converter, but there is no power (or not enough) to power the converter.

That's quite a complicated signal chain with many variables. One thing you might try is instead of using the Firewire out on your converter, use the composite/RCA outs > RCA to HDMI Converter > HDMI to USB-C adapter

You can power the Canopus converter with an AC adapter, right?
