Thing is, where I live, one cannot just toddle down to the nearest store and buy fresh batteries. Seeing I suffer squirrels disease anyway, and seldom throw things away, there are batteries numerous lying about. If one is a bit tired for the job, then two tired batteries joined in series will do it. Most circuits these days will tolerate the extra voltage from old batteries because the current doesn't increase much. Nickel-cadmium batteries are such limited-life crud, that it's better to use alkaline, even carbon-zinc, batteries in series, and 'hot-wire' the home-made pack into the device's terminals. Good fun too!
