An important note about upgrading to Mojave!

We will likely see Mojave go live very soon. Perhaps this afternoon (Sep 24, 2018, Monday)

Just want to remind everyone that if you upgrade to Mojave, you will have no choice between HFS+ and APFS formatting. Mojave will automatically format your hard drive (spinner, Fusion, and of course SSD) to APFS. According to Apple, Mojave will not boot from HFS+, therefore you will have no choice in the matter if you choose to upgrade to Mojave.

Make sure you have a Time Machine backup. It is also recommended to have a clone bootable backup. (CCC or SD)

I never thought to check my betas filesystem since my 2012 iMac had a 1TB spinning drive. Interesting.

Didn't the High Sierra, or earlier version of macOS changed the file system by default to APFS for SSD drives? My Macbook boot drive already has APFS file system...

Yes, High Sierra upgraded SSD to APFS, but Mojave is doing that for spinners and Fusion drives as well. So for most of us, this transition shouldn't mean anything or have any huge impact.

I have been running the beta for a couple of months and the last month on my primary drive. I have had nothing to report on the last two versions so the GS should be pretty solid. System security changes have produced some novel changes to the installation of some software, in particular those that require access to system files like CCC, OnyX and probably Malwarebytes.

Thinking about this, does that mean that my CCC clone will no longer boot if I upgrade? Will the first CCC run after upgrading reformat the backup drive? I was going to do the upgrade tomorrow, but I think I'll just wait to see...

Ferrarr, all of my apps that were running on High Sierra are running on Mojave including the sixteen 32bit apps which I already had. On launching any of them a dialogue box informs me that these apps are not “optimised” for macOS 10.14 but they will continue to run until Apple updates to a version that no longer supports them. It further suggests checking if the developer has or is going to produce a 64bit version.
CCC released a free upgrade for Mojave a few days ago however there had already been a couple of updates and these backups were bootable because I tested them. The newest version like a couple of other apps I am already running require the addition of a permission package that needs admin approval to access system files.
I was already running APFS on my SSD so no issue there for me but I believe Mojave brings APFS to spinners and fusion drives. I have not checked yet but I believe CCC will be APFS too. I’ll get back on that as soon as I get a chance to read the support info.

My PCIe SSD was formatted to APFS from the factory and I ran High Sierra all during the time it was active. CCC works just fine regardless if your external drive is formatted to HFS+ or APFS, and it will continue to boot. I've already proved that to myself. If your CCC external hard drive is already formatted to APFS, then you don't need to do anything. But if it's formatted to HFS+, it will continue to work and boot.

No, not necessary Bob. The mobile version of our forum software is different from the normal browser version. Nick and one other person have been working with our forum software and will get things sorted out in the future. For now, let's be thankful that we have your Avatar and Jake's working as they should. Later on we will worry about applying fixes to the mobile version.

CCC has been doing that now for some time. As a matter of fact, ever since High Sierra was deployed. I can't speak for SuperDuper as I do not use it.

I figured the CCC clone would enable me to restore, but the question is, will it boot from the CCC clone on an HFS+ drive? Charlie's statement that I quoted said that

Mojave will not boot from HFS+

which is what triggered my question. Part of the beauty of having a CCC clone is that if the internal drive totally fails, while you are waiting for a replacement to arrive, you can boot from the backup itself, then clone it back to the new replacement and you don't even lose a step. But if Mojave cannot boot from HFS+, then you would have to format the CCC target drive as AFPS in order to boot from it. And that's going to be a royal PITA, if it is required. Charlie said it would still boot, but I'll go read the links at the CCC site to see what they have to say about it.
