Accessing Time Machine Data

I can only access a limited amount of Time Machine backup. There are many blacked out backups that won't come up. Does anyone know how to open them?

Do you mean you can only open backups back to a certain date OR there are backups you can't open scattered throughout the dates? If the former, it may be that Time Machine is deleting older backups to make room for newer ones - how much free space is there on your time machine drive?

It will only open backups back to a certain date. What is a time machine drive? My backup disc has 423 GB available of 667 total. Over on the right hand side it shows backup dates back to 2012.
