That's the problem. If you're shipping something and it's marked "FRAGILE" the carriers will always assume it's packed REALLY well, and can take some abuse. (I had a friend who worked for the post office, and this is what their workers believe.) So they'll abuse it. In the future, pack it really well and don't write "Fragile" on it.

"FRAAAA-GIIIIIILLLLLLEHHHH...must be Italian." ;)

Ever see the strike marks a clawhead hammer makes on a piece of wood? That's exactly the kind of damage that had been done to this box (repeatedly). My guess is that they were going to show us just how "careful" they can be. They felt around with the hammer until they found something solid and then nailed it as hard as they possibly could. It wouldn't have mattered how well this was packed (and it was packed very well), they were beating on it until they found the article contained within. I will never ship something of value with UPS again. I've never seen such willful disrespect for someone else's property. Let's hope what comes around does indeed go around.

Well all of the carriers are like that. Thankfully at least you were able to get the insurance out of them. I've had to deal with that kind of asshattery from UPS/Fed Ex/DHL/USPS before...the first thing to do (for those who don't know) is Tell the Driver. The driver will know if a box is damaged, but won't report it...you have to tell them to. Also, TAKE PICTURES of the box/parcel. Document everything. Call that delivery company immediately, after the driver leaves and don't stop complaining until you can get your local rep to come down to your office (or you bring it to theirs) to be inspected.

A late update:

This happened to me. Again. In a FedEx store. It was a divided UPS/FedEx store, and the FedEx people were sour and surly, and very easily annoyed. The UPS people were like Apple techs. Happy, cheerful, and wanting to do their job.

I'm swearing off FedEx.

Perhaps FedEx docked their employee's pay for being jerks, and UPS employee's just got a raise for not being jerks. :D

A friend of mine worked for one of the big carriers. He said when the truck was stacked high with boxes, about the only thing they could do is jump up and knock the boxes on top down to the ground and then pick them up. He said it was pretty common and he knew other carriers did it as well.

Pack your things well, folks.
