Hi,

I just purchased my 5k iMac, and are quite happy with it apart from the quality the camera is devlivering. The Pictures / video are not Sharp, blurry and washed out. I can see tht it indeed does record in the 720p resolution, so it is HD allright, but the quality is simply poor. When comparing this with my +2 year old MB Air in the very same light/position, the MB air shows a significant better Picture.
I went to the local retailer [not an Apple store], and did the very same comparison with the laptop and iMac thet had in the store and the very same issue showed - poor quality on the iMac and good quality on the MB Air / Pro.
The oens at the store never heard of this before, and were actually shocked to see this.
I called Apple, and they seem to care very Little about this as they only would focus on my iMac and replace it if neded - however it seems to make ittle sense if I will ge the very same issue with a new iMac...

Anyone who have knowledge within this area or an advice as to what I should do next?

how is your Picture qulity on your 5k iMac?

Kind regards
Lasse

You're actually the very first person I've heard with this issue. If you get no satisfactory solutions...return it and get another one. Or take it to an Apple Store for them to resolve.

Welcome to Mac-Forums..

What application are you using to capture the video? I presume you are using the built-in camera for your testing?

Hi - I have simply been using the Facetime app or Photo Booth ...

what I find weird is that it was the exact same experience at the store, why it seems to be a general problem.

anyone else with an iMac 5k who can share their thoughts?

It's not a general problem. We have lots of members on Mac-Forums who own the new 27" 5k retina iMac. And not one person (as far as I know) has complained of camera issues.

You have a new computer. There's no reason to stress about this. It's possible this particular unit has an issue. Just take it to Apple to be examined.:)

Nick, what actualy annoys me is that the one I checked at the store showed the same poor quality, why I am seriously wondering if this is what I should expect [meaning that a new iMac won't make any difference ....]

You won't know for sure until you do as Nick advises. And if it turns out the camera quality is poor on all 5K Macs, then there is nothing you can do about it except to return the machine for a refund (if you're within the return time frame).

My question - are you watching the video in a 720p sized window on both screens or are you watching a 720p video full screen on both machines?

I would think a 720p video played back full screen on a 1440 x 900 display is going to appear drastically better than playng it back full screen on a 5120 x 2880 display. Computer monitors typically do not have the same technology as TVs (pixel doubling or whatever they call it, can't remember right now) for watching lower resolution video.

You could test this yourself by moving each video to the other machine.

Good question Tom. Could very well be that there's a detail missing in this thread that could explain things.:)

It is an ad - while it continuously notes the 5k iMac, it is offering to do "nothing" that other similar software does. While the headline proclaims converting to 5k, in fact, it does not convert anything to "5k", it only converts between formats like any other video conversion software out there.
