I was at CompUSA a few days ago comparing the IMacs. I don't know if it was my eyes or the brightness was set differently but the 24" IMac was MUCH brighter than the 20" and 17" models. I will be purchasing an IMac this fall mainly for digital photography and videography. I know a good monitor is a must have for for the colors and picture quality when dealing in line of work. Are the 24s naturally brighter than the lower end models?

One way to be sure they are set the same is hit the F14-F15 keys. Those control brightness. Be sure all machines are full tilt. I have heard the 24" seems brighter. Looked very nice when I saw one.

I believe when I was checking specs, the 24" has a brighter screen but the 20" has a higher contrast ratio. The 17" is lower in both specs.
Let me check the Apple website....
Copied directly from the Apple website:

Typical brightness: 250 cd/m (17-inch model); 280 cd/m (20-inch model); 400 cd/m (24-inch model)

Typical contrast ratio: 500:1 (17-inch model); 800:1 (20-inch model); 700:1 (24-inch model)

Yeah, the 24" is crazy bright...

Even turned all the way down, it's still perfectly legible...

I'd say demo the 24 inch in the store. Personally I think 20-22 inch is about right. The one thing 24 inch gives you is a higher native resolution.

That link will give you all you need to know. Yes, the 24" and 20" use different video cards but you can buy them with either a 128MB or 256MB card so they should perform equally as well in either computer.
20" is more than enough to handle my photoshop needs and I work with RAW files that come from 10MP to 16MP pro SLR cameras.
