This loading screen has only shown up recently after updating to 10.11.4

When the macbook first came was faster to boot with almost no loading screen as above.

I know it's never going to be super fast it is 2009 model.

But it is odd after the update it has appeared.

I'm surprised that no others with the same Mac and OS haven't replied with some sort of comparison comment at least.

I also don't know what extra stuff you have nor what all you have set as startup items.

There should be some startup videos on the 'net somewhere to have a look at and compare.

only item on startup is skype.

I honestly cannot remember if i had skype before update.

will disable it and try.

Just odd as after the update this delayed startup came about...

I disabled skype and also two other items i did not know was set to auto start.

the loading screen takes 55 seconds (timed) to get to the password prompt.

Can you remind us again how you installed El Capitan on this computer? Since Skype & "two other items" are not part of a fresh OS install..if this was a "copy & paste" install from another computer…there could be a lot of "junk" from the other computer now on this MacBook.

I do understand that maybe Skype & the "two other items" may have been installed after the El Capitan install.:)

I bought it 2nd hand with El Capitan already installed.

I put skype there.
The other two items are dropbox (i installed) and itunes helper.

I have renabled skype with no difference to loading screen time.

I updated from 10.11.3 to 10.11.4 thats when this loading screen seemed to hang/delay.
could be coincidence of course.

Ok…thanks for the reminder.:)

Since it came preinstalled with El Capitan (could have junk on it from the previous owner). If you don't have anything important installed on the HD…you could always boot into the Recovery Partition…and do a fresh install of El Capitan (erase the disk first using Disk Utility).

This may take a while…but then you would have a 100% clean install of El Capitan in it. Of course a 2nd source of slow performance could be an old/wearing out or worn out HD. I think I remember you mentioning about wanting to upgrade the HD.:)

Well decided not to get the hybrid and bought a 240GB full SSD instead. only £45 shipped with upto 510MB read and write speed.

unlike windows OSX is quite small so this should be fine.

Where can I download El Capitan as want a fresh install on new drive.
Also are there any (or is it automatic) tweaking tools to run if putting OSX on an SSD?

Now has 6GB ram as found a 4GB stick in an old dead laptop in my spare room.
Will go to 8GB when find/buy another 4GB stick.

No speed increase but might help with overhead later as plan on installing dreamweaver and photoshop.

I was wondering when this was going to get snipped and was considering a PM or admin report notice…

Users have enough Mac software troubles without introducing extra unneeded software ones.

I now have a 240GB SSD installed and working.

from push power button to password request is now 30 seconds, not bad for 2009 machine.

Installed to external drive then swapped them over.

Do I need trim tools or anything to run OSX on an SSD?

It seems to depend on the make & model of SSD and the OS X version you're running.

I'd start checking with the manufacturer's support techs.

When it comes to owning Apple computer hardware…this is something that needs to get used to.;) Been this way since the beginning (1984):(…unless items are purchased from sites that are dedicated to selling Macintosh hardware & upgrades.:)

It's actually better than it used to be…but only a little bit.;)

You'll need to check the specs on the actual Adata SSD model.

I'm just looking into the various cheaper Adata, Crutial and PNY SSD models and their specs for my old 2007 MBPro whose four year old OCZ SSD replacement seems to have just up and died the other day. It's normally running OS X SL 10.6.8.

Sure lots has changed in the SSD department within the last four years when I last really looked. And now OCZ doesn't even exist!!!
