1st gen nano "dock adapter"

my nano came with this thing that looks like a dock, but as far i can tell, doesnt do a dam thing. does anybody know what it is?

its a universial dock connector.. lets say you go out and buy the apple dock and your nano flops around in the dock. you would use that little white plastic piece to get a snug fit.
