Today is not my day. My keyboard had some dents in it so I ordered a new part and changed out the keyboard on my 17" hi res 2.4ghz.

When I turned it back on there was no chime, a solid sleep light and a black screen. I reset the PRAM and now I have a startup chime and a black screen. Now, when the lid is open, sleep light turns off, but when lid is closed sleep light is solid. I swapped out the ram and this did not change anything. I also am no getting any signal to an external monitor.

Anyone have any ideas ??

The obvious solution is to go back over the work that you did. You may have dislodged a cable or connection. Remove the keyboard again and make sure everything is hooked up the way it should be.

Use the breakout step by step instructions provided at iFixit: Apple Mac, MacBook, iPod, and iPhone Repair Parts.

Regards.

Yes i of course have triple checked everything. Replacing the keyboard is pretty straightforward, not sure what could have been touched since it is just the one snap cable to the logic board. Is the keyboard for the Hi res model the same as the base model ?

Since I just took it apart again, now I am not getting a startup chime again, but computer still sounds like it is turning on but with the sleep light solid.

Any other suggestions ?

I'm not sure if the keyboards are the same or if it would make a difference. You would have to check the part number against the original one. I've seen strange things happen with electronic equipment when swapping out a component with one that was not the original.

Also, when you pulled the keyboard connector from the main board, were you careful to hold down the board end and then gently rock the connector loose? If a very small crack developed around the connector or elsewhere, that could be troublesome. I've done that myself when in a hurry - causing more work and repairs.

Check the main board best you can. Try flexing the board gently around the connector with the machine on to see if perhaps it's a hairline crack or loosened ground. Use the eraser end of a wood pencil or a chopstick to press around the connector.

Let us know.

Regards.
