Somebody at ComputerForum.com said that they will be releasing a 15" MacBook soon and the low end model will run around $1000. I haven't heard of this here or anywhere. I figured since the Mac-Forums team would probably know more than that guy, I'd ask you all if this was true.

Of course it's true. It's as true as that hover-touch-controlled iPod they were releasing. With a Graphic Scroll Wheel :p .

Nobody can ever tell if an Apple Product will come out unless they announce it themselves. They learnt from what happened last time they let too much out, and now they're very strict about it.

For those of us who are new to the mac community, what did happen the last time they let too much out?

I'm interested in what happened last time (although I have a feeling it's about the OS X like features that have made it to MS Windows).

As for the 15" - I think this one might be a go - it actually sounds like a good idea for Apple to capitalise on a successful product like the macbook but offer it at a slightly reduced premium to drag more people in from the cold.

However just because it sounds like a good idea to me doesn't mean it is a good idea - Apple don't seem keen to offer cheap/budget versions of their very nice products.

At $1000 ~ £500 that's a little bit closer to your Windows laptop prices (not the ultra-portables or the high end gaming devices - but the ones that college students will want - the ones that people on lower wages might want) so maybe it would be a good idea for apple to go after this potential market. I don't think it would harm either of their existing portable products as the macbook is an ultra-portable device which is worth more anyway and the MBPs are higher end stuff that are equally worth their premiums.
