I actually downloaded the combo update from Apple's website. Stupid question but.. things that aren't needed (redundant stuff) won't be installed right ? I mean, does OS X detect what is needed only ? I did the combo and upon updating it said that it would take up over a gig of space.

On my imac (currently 10.6.2) the 10.6.3 update is 437.8MB

If you think about it from an historical perspective...437.8meg is an absolutely insane update size!

Even compare that OS update size to the size of some application's sold today...and it's still insanely big for an update.

How the heck big would the update be if 10.6 was still PPC compatible & still had PPC code in it like 10.5 was...then it would be REALLY BIG!:(

Engadget had 757.3 MB when upgrading from 10.6.2 for some reason which is even worse. My guess is that SU was pulling down the combo for their system which doesn't make sense to me.

Hmmm... my updater likewise pulled down the 757 MB update. My connection is real fast so I thought nothing of it. Anyway, it installed fine and everything seems OK thus far.

Regards.

Are you upgrading from 10.6.2? I'm still trying to figure out why some people who supposedly had 10.6.2 are getting a version of 10.6.3 that is approx. 300 MB larger.

I think it mentioned an ATI upgrade also so if you had an iMac I believe the file would be
larger.

What exactly is the difference between a regular and a combo update?

The combo update is a combination of anything 10.6.x leading upto the combo update and anything that you may have missed.
I believe that the structure is less fragmented, and this is why it seems to often be a fix for minor glitches in many cases.
Whenever a combo update comes out, I install it.... even if I am on 10.6.3 already, I still go ahead and install the 10.6.3 combo update.
