Is it kosher? lol. I recently downloaded the most recent update for OS X and it hasn't given me any problems.

I think the majority of people have had no problems.

Check out the 10.4.9 thread to see what sort of issues some people are having.

I installed mine first day without a problem. :black:

Same here.

I have absolutely no empirical evidence of this phenomenon, but having worked in IT for about 10 years, I've noticed a few trends here and there. One of them is that whenever a new update or patch is rolled out to my user community, inevitably, certain people will have problems. Why is this? Is it because the patch was flawed? If so, then why do the vast majority not have problems? I surmise that because there was a change, any problem certain individuals might experience is now immediately attributable to that update, at least in their minds. Even if it's a completely unrelated problem, now, if there's a problem, it must be because of that patch. I think much of this is just an inherent fear of change that is innate in some people.

Does that mean that this update is completely without flaw? Probably not, but I think that at least to some degree it's a problem of perception and not fact. Even if there was a pre-existing condition, people will now attribute any error message or problem to the fact that their machine was updated.

I know it's completely unrelated coming from the Wndows world, but every single time Microsoft rolls out a new service pack - even going back to the Windows NT days, you'd hear the Windows-centric forums talk about how horrible the new update is. Then, after a few months gestation, suddenly the roar subsides to a whisper and although no specific fixes were released, suddenly that service pack is OK and generally accepted.

My advice would be to back up your system, install the update and see how it goes. Worst case scenario, you can always roll right back. But I can tell you that I've had absolutely no issues thus far and I installed it on day one.

Yeah, let's just go ahead and merge this thread with that one to make this place a little tidier.:black:

You probably know how to get it back but just in case:

System Preferences (click the apple icon in the top left corner of your screen)
Network (it's on the third row)
Choose "AirPort" in the dropdown box labeled "Show:"
Make sure "AirPort" is chosen in the row of buttons (AirPort, TCP/IP, PPPoE, etc.)
Check the box at the bottom that says "Show AirPort status in menu bar"

Thanks man :)

Thanks man :)

I had problems....my MBP did not work again!! However now I have taken it back to the shop and the tech's have had a look at it, they have discovered I had a faulty main board and I am now getting a new MBP to replace the other one.

So the question is....did the update cause the fault? or was there a unseen fault anyway??

Either way I'll be happy again soon....and I can get off this PC again.

Software is software, hardware is hardware. A change to software will not generally break hardware unless we're talking about the EFI or PRAM. If your motherboard was faulty to begin with, the 10.4.9 did not have anything to with its failure.

correction. 2 different scenarios...
1. when i boot from internal drive, and have external turned on in OSX. if i sleep my laptop, the external stays on. it also doesnt go off after so many minutes like it used to :(

2. when i boot from the image on my external. when i sleep the computer now, it acts as normal, sleeping the disk

Wow, scary stuff.

I wont lie, I'm REALLY new to Mac. So new infact I havent even ordered mine yet (March 30, wait is killing me!), but I have been reading and reading non stop about macs and posting on here.

When my new Mac does arrive, should I hold off on installing this update and await a patched version?

If you read the comments and the article in its entirety, people say to keep your system up to date.

It's really not complicated at all: just let the update install itself and go through the whole process, go fix yourself a cup of coffee in the kitchen instead of typing away and doing all sorts of things. Nowadays the updates take a lot less than 10 minutes in total and even at that I might be exaggerating: it might not even take 5 minutes.

So this isn't hard to do at all till Apple fixes this godawful bug.

Interesting. I read where it said "dont touch it" but that just seemed, well, too simple of a solution lol

Being a Windows user nearly all my life I'm used to going through steps A-M in order to solve a problem, simply not doing anything is a little strange to me, but very welcomed lol.

I'll do the firmware update again when the new MBP arrives later this week....but I will have all my fingers and toes crossed. I doubt that the firmware killed the last one, I'd say more likely a faulty part.
