Built in ethernet dead??

Hi everyone, new to the forums and have a question. My G4 stopped getting internet completely. I think it happened after a storm. The settings are fine and I was wondering if it was possible that my built in ethernet adapter somehow died. If this does sound right, whats my best option to fix it. Some guy from a repair place tried to say that the whole motherboard would need to be replaced. This doesnt seem right at all, but maybe it is. Any help anyone can give me would be really appreciated. Thanks soo much. Matt

Hi, thanks for the response. I just went and bought a mac compatible NIC card and installed it and the driver, but still no internet and the setting are like they should be. Do I have to somehow select the new card soo the computer know to use it and not the standard built in one? I tried doing it in the drop down menu "configure" in network settings, but only found built in ethernet and internal modem. Am I on the right track or overthinking things or is there something else wrong after all??? Thanks so much. Matt

Go to applications, utilities, and open up terminal. Post the results of the following command;

Code:
sudo ifconfig

not IPconfig, IFconfig (all lower case). just , ifconfig, not sudo ifconfig.

Is it currently plugged into the internet? How are you accessing the network, dialup, broadband? Are you using a router or conncted direct to a modem? Only thing I see strange or different is that the media autoselect is inactive. Go to your network control panel, open up "network". Do show "Built-in-Ethernet. Select button on right "Ethernet", then do "Configure manually. Make sure speed is set to autoselect.

my ethernet cord was not plugged into that cpu at the time. I use broadband and a router. Ill try it again with the cord plugged into the new NIC Card I just bought and installed the driver for and see if that changes any of the readings through ifconfig...BRB

Check one of your known working PC's on the same port your none working machine is using and see what happens.

In additions to moving mac to a new connection, try another ethernet cord.

media: autoselect (none) status: inactive. This line from your first paste makes me think your ethernet port is dead, but I could be wrong.

Ya thats what I was thinking too, but the only part that doesnt make sense is why it doesnt work through the new NIC card I bought... Installed it and everything, but it seems like the cpu is still trying to use the assumed "dead" built in port. Any ideas how i find and tell my cpu to use the new NIC card in the pci slot? Thanks.

Did you have to load a driver for it? Or it did it even come with one? If you did, did you go to the internet and see if there's an update for your particular model?
Did you try a different port on your router or hub or whatever it is your using?

What brand and model is your PCI Nic? Are you sure it supports OSX and Tiger?

In Networking with the built in and the modem there should be another icon for that card. Built In Ethernet, Internal Modem and another for that card. If not there has to be an issue with the driver.
