The Apple hardware test isn't bad but I think it misses some things from time to time. MY G5 tower did this when I first got it and it took a while to figure out because initially the problem was infrequent.

Over time it got worse but the Apple hardware test found no problems. I used http://www.memtestosx.org/joomla/index.php" It lists compatibility through 10.5.8 so I am not sure about Snow Leopard.
