Did you just stick in the SSD or clone the HDD first?

Either way check this out from Apples website.. Its how to use the recovery mode.
Apple - OS X Recovery restores your Mac with a few clicks.

These little features are what separates a Mac from just another PC.. Fat chance seeing this on a windows based PC..

No I didn't clone the hard drive.

Just opened it up again and it appears the connection between the SSR and the logic board had come undone. After several difficult attempts I think I have got it installed and connected.

Rebooting now.

Just to expand a bit. As i screwed the antenna grate into the chassis and SSD it was pushing down and popping off the connector that connects the SSD to the logic board.

In the end I managed to fit it all using a spudger to prevent the connector coming off. Awkward but got there in the end.

OSX install has gone fine.
