Will my machine support RAM like this?

Hi,

I'm looking to add some more RAM to my 5.1, Six core Mac Pro.

I've recently upgraded the computer from a 2009 4.1 with a quad core processor to a 5.1 and a six core.
One of the advantages of having the updated firmware from a 4.1 to 5.1, is that the machine can accept faster ram.
With 4.1 firmware, I could only use 1066mhz, but now I can use 1333hz sticks.

The computer supports a maximum of 48gb, and I want to utilise all of that.
The mother board has four ram slots, so I'll be needing to buy some 16gb chips to get the full 48gb in there.

I found these on eBay:

P8AAOSw--1WtOjJ" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Crucial-16GB-DDR3-1333MHz-PC3...

I wasn't sure if would work, though.
I've been having a hard time finding what would and wouldn't work, and I haven't really been able to find anything online, as there seem to be a ton of different ones.

I was wondering if anyone here knew if those sticks should work?

Thanks allot.

Double check the ram specs against what Crucial.com suggests for a Mac Pro 5,1. If the specs match…then the ram should work. Or you could simply order from Crucial.com (UK).:)

Thanks for the response.

I had a look and there isn't any 1333mhz sticks for Mac at 16gb on the crucial website.
I actually checked there the other day, and also found that the memory they specified worked for the 5.1 MP's were 1600mhz, oddly.

I'm questioning their existence, at least in the uk, because I can't find any of that spec specifically for Mac anywhere.

The only way I can max out the system with 48gb is to utilise 16gb sticks, so the most I can get right now is 32..

Mac Sales (www.macsales.com) here in the US stocks the 16 GB memory modules you're seeking and they will ship to you in the UK. However, it may be expensive because of your VAT and any import customs. But if you would like to see what they have, here is their LINK to the specific memory modules.

Thanks for the links.

I think maybe I will have to send off for them to be shipped from the US, then, unfortunetly.
Hopefully I won't have to pay a ton of money at my door step because of customs.

I hadn't actually heard of OWC, but I just looked the up on amazon, and there is a 16gb ecc stick at 1333mhz for Mac:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006TEDEUE/

It does say that it's for the 8 and 4 core Mac Pro systems, but I presume that goes for the 3.33ghz Six core models too?

Thanks

Yes, they should work for the six core models. And since Amazon has an excellent refund policy, you can always return them if they don't work. And that's very convenient for you rather than do the oversea shipping thing.

I went to Crucial UK as well. Yes…it lists only 1600mhz ram for 2010 Mac Pro's. If Crucial says it will work…then it should work. If for some reason it doesn't…return it.

Changing the firmware changes nothing inside your Mac Pro. According to Mactracker the 4.1 and the 5.1 take the same memory except for the (E on the 2010). It will still run at 1066MHz and not 1333MHz.

Quote "240-pin PC3-10600E (1333 MHz) DDR3 ECC SDRAM (memory speed for certain configurations is 1066 MHz)"

Can't seem to get onto mactracker, for some reason.
What are you referring to by the E? I'm sorry, I don't understand.

That's a shame if that's the case.

Thanks.

Mactracker shows the 4.1 model as "240-pin PC3-8500 (1066MHz) DDR3 ECC SDRAM".

Mactracker shows the 5.1 model as "240-pin PC3-10600E (1333 MHz) DDR3 ECC SDRAM (memory speed for certain configurations is 1066 MHz)".

The main reason for doing the hack was to use the faster processors of the 2010 model. The information on memory speed being limited to the 1066MHz is Mactracker's not mine.

Thanks for the response.

So apart from the 2010 machine you mentioned, neither the 5.1 or 4.1 upgraded to 5.1 are capable of utilizing the 1333mhz speed?

And I know, I've done that upgrade.
I now have a the 3.33ghz 6 core in my machine as opposed to the older quad core.

Am I better off buying 1066mhz ram, then?

Why the **** is it this confusing...

Because you did an unofficial Mac Pro firmware upgrade from 4,1 to 5,1. Whenever you go "off the grid"…things can get confusing!;)

Well judging by what's been said, it would've been almost just as annoying if I had an original 5.1 machine.
I've only managed to find a single seller for a 16gb compatible stick for the 5.1 in the whole country..:Smirk:
