The Microsoft Office that came with my 2011 iMac was lost after I got a new hard drive put in. Will Apple give me the software again?
Thanks

To the best of my knowledge Microsoft Office never shipped with Apple computers (unless it was some sort of special Academic deal). Also this is a 4 year old computer (even extended Applecare only lasts 3 years).

So my gut feeling is no. But hey (if your computer really did ship brand new with Office)…give Apple a call…explain things…and see what happens.

Ya never know with Apple.:)

Microsoft Office 2008 and for awhile 2011 was an option that could be ordered with a new Mac from Apple. However, Apple discontinued that some time ago when they started pushing their iWork suite a bit more vigorously. Of course now the iWork suite is free with a new Mac.

@MacLover2011:

Do you still have your product key or serial number(s) from Microsoft Office? If you have retained those, you may be able to download a copy of Office thru Microsoft or order a backup disk from them. Then you could reinstall whichever version you have without paying for it again.

Great distinction Charlie. I think that I was thinking OP meant Office came free with the new computer. Versus was an option ($$$) with a new computer.

I agree. If OP has original product info (keys/codes)…should be able to get it somehow.:)

There was also a TRIAL VERSION of Microsoft Office that shipped with some Macs pre-iWork (that's going back a very long way now). There is utterly no chance whatsoever that a shipping consumer Mac ever shipped with a free copy of Microsoft Office 2011, and there is even less chance than that that Apple is going to give you a free copy now.

I wonder if the OP means he purchased from an eBay dealer or similar who had all this great FREE software on it?

I think Apple will not get the software back for you again. You know, Microsoft Office suit is not free. Now you shoule reflect and explain this issue to Apple.

Long ago a 30 day trial of MS Office was included, and at least in the UK Apple used to offer Software, including Office, as a purchased pre installed option. It was never a free option.

They probably wouldn't, since one set (excel, word, ppt, etc) costs like $150. Like chscag said, if you have the serial key or something, you can download office 2011 and enter the key. If you bought office using a microsoft account, most likely they'll have a record of it. So hey, just give a call to microsoft, they might even give you a new key.

I need a bit of clarification here, you say, "The Microsoft Office that came with my 2011 iMac was lost after I got a new hard drive put in." Was this a new machine or a second hand one? Did the old HD die? If not why didn't the contents get restored to the new one (including MS Office)?

Here's what happened. I got a new hard drive. I must have done time-machine restore incorrectly the first time. It shows the microsoft icons but not the content. When I went back to the Apple Store the Apple rep gave me a free version of Microsoft 2016. :) When I did the second timemachine restore with an Apple Rep on the phone I did get my old Microsoft 2011 restored. But I just uninstalled the 2011 version and installed 2016 version. :)

By the way, I have a question. On my Outlook 2016 can I migrate an Outlook email I created for Windows 8 into my Microsoft 2016 Outlook? It doesn't seem to be letting me.

You must be related to my best friend! She can get stores to do things I never could imagine. Wow! Getting them to give you a copy of Office 2016 is awesome. Now make sure you have the license key stored away safely.

:D I have a way of bringing out the kindness from people. Once a guitar store gave me a free Martin Guitar shirt just for asking for it.
Yes indeed, I will never lose that Microsoft key! :)
