This update just showed up today. My iPhoto will not open up since I didn't get it upgraded in time after installing Yosemite. Here are two screen shots showing the update and what I get when I try to update it.

My suggestion would be to enjoy Photos. It's good, and in El Capitan it will be fantastic.

If I drag the old iPhoto App to the trash, will the update prompt just go away?

Remove the iPhoto app from your Applications folder but don't delete it. Now go to your purchased items in the Mac App Store and download iPhoto. You'll have version 9.6.1.

Unless Apple have removed it!

And if we are going to remove iPhoto in favour of Photos we might as well remove the iPhoto Library as well.

No, the Photos Library IS the iPhoto Library.

No chas-m, that is not so. The Photos library is a copy of the iPhoto library. As seen here.

I have already helped a number of people who were getting short of space by advising them to delete their iPhoto Library, assuming they were happy using Photos exclusively. Perhaps you can too? As you can see from the file size I am only adding to Photos now. I only keep the iPhoto library because I can (don't need the space) and I occasionally refer back to iPhoto for comparisons sake.

That worked. Thanks.

I'm running Mavericks on my iMac and contemplating moving to El Capitan. My iPhoto is 9.5.1. I am unable to bring iPhoto up to this latest release (says it's incompatible), yet elsewhere I'm told to upgrade to the latest iPhoto before pdating the OS. Suggestions as to how to overcome this Catch-22 please.

@sawday

It was really in relation to Rod's points about separate libraries (iPhoto and Photos). I realise that it doesn't help you directly. No offence meant.

Sorry - didn't seem relevant to my query. I don't need to merge anything. I was concerned with how to get my iPhoto library up to a state to make a problem free move to El Capitan.
Try following the directions in post number 4.

Hi sawday, I'm wondering if the "easier" way for you might be to update to Yosemite first. That may allow the necessary iPhoto update and creation of current Photos library. Then after checking that iPhoto is working, check for updates and apply then upgrade to ElCapitan. Given that iPhoto is essentially a redundant app skipping an upgrade may not be a good idea.

Be aware that iPhoto is starting to fail under El Capitan. It still works mostly as expected, but Photo Stream is no longer functional. I expect this sort of thing will continue over time and further OS updates, so my suggestion would be to move to Photos or seek an alternative program, because iPhoto is not likely to continue for much longer.

Thanks. Can you advice what version iPhoto should be before moving to Yosemite? I've moved the app (9.5.1) from Applications but App Store still has it indicated as 'Installed' so am unable to download 9.6.1.

It has to be 9.6.1 or it will not work in Yosemite. This doesn't really matter, as Photos will import from your former iPhoto library, and is a fine substitute.

OK but would still like to know how I can get up to 9.6.1. Unable to move to Yosemite yet as I am awaiting confirmation that numerous other programs that I rely on are compatible - Canon MP Navigator, Silverfast, Nikon ViewNX, Photosweeper & iBank amongst them, which is why I thought I'd go straight to El Capitan once they are compatible with that. I hate playing catch-up all the time but by the time one has waited to check that all is well with a new OSX release another is upon us. Sigh.
