I'm trying to help my friend - every time we talk on the phone, she's using her earbuds to talk and there's random static / crackling / as if her phone is brushing up against something or in a pocket... but she's not moving at all. The connection is clean. Any ideas how to fix, what's wrong, will another pair have same problem?

Isolate the issue by trying a wired headphones, the phone's speakers and different earbuds. If those are all clean, then the issue is with the earbuds she's currently using.

What model iPhone? What brand/model earbuds? Do they have microphones in them? Could it be her hair brushing against the microphones? Does it occur if she takes her phone out of the pocket and either carries it in her hand, or better yet, put it down on a table or other surface?

That is an excellent suggestion IMO, I don't use earbuds but do you use behind-the-ear hearing aids and that is a very common problem if the hair around the ears is not kept trimmed super short.

Crackling like that is most likely caused by the earbuds cable, but the way to approach this is to isolate the issue like Ashwin suggested
