Rather than buy a protective case, I just bought an extra Macbook. That way, when my first one gets all scratched up, I can just throw it out and use the new one.

I don't use a case or skin, it's not that I don't take good care of my things... However your computer is made to be USED not to sit a look new, mine has many superficial scratches, doesn't matter. Focus on keeping your machine in good working order rather then babying the exterior.
