user/library/mail folder 14 gig!!

I use mail with gmail. I thought the messages were stored on the server and were not taking up space on my hard drive.
Evidently not. The folder is huge. How do I get these deleted without the server trying to download them again?

Go to gmail in your browser. Go to Settings, select Labels.
Make sure this is unchecked:
NOTE: this doesn't work with Mavericks. You need to do the opposite since Mavericks 'fixed' Mail.
