Just bought a mid 2015 MBP. Noticed that the USB port is off when the MBP is off. How can I hack this so that it's always on? I need it so I can charge my phone.

According to this Apple document...the USB ports should be providing power if the computer is "sleeping". If the computer is actually powered down/shut down...then the USB ports provide no power:

When you say MBP is off, do you mean really off or asleep? If off, then all I say is 'Duh'. If asleep, then USB should continue providing power..

Hello and welcome to the forum! :) About to respond w/ the quote below, but Nick & Ashwin were quicker - link already given.

But, I must ask, why are 'turning off' your computer (if that is correct)? I leave my iMac & both Mac laptops always powered and simply let each 'sleep' - this should solve your issue; I believe that many here do the same. Dave

Your Apple computer or display must be powered on and must be awake. If your Apple computer or display is asleep, all ports will provide their normal maximum output. If your Apple computer or display is powered off, no power will be provided.

And why on earth would you 'hack' your new MBP and kill the warranty stone dead?

Thank you all for the prompt reply and jabs. I'm a long time MBP user but switched to a PC laptop at work. PC's apparently have the USB port active all the time. That's why my question. And I forgot; Apple OS can't be hacked. At any rate, I will do as many said and use the "sleep" mode. The newest MBP was a consideration but I am glad I bought this to replace my 2009 MBP.

Are you sure that a PC when turned off keeps the USB powered on?

NONE of my PC Laptops when totally powered off have USB ports that power things. Not that I have ever seen in fact. I don't think my desktop PC's do either.

Been a while since I had a PC, but the ports on them went dead when the box was off.
