.
I might connect an external hard drive with a USB C connection to my iMac.
The transfer speed of the SSD is similar to a Samsung T7

Will a Thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 adapter work with the2014 imac .
What transfer rate will occur with the iMac, based on an educated guess.

I have a late 2014 imac 21.5 inch
with 8gb ram
1tb Hdd, not a ssd
thanks

Hello redsquash.

Do you already have the drive...or are you still shopping for one? Wasn't 100% sure.

If you already have the drive...is it a "traditional" USB-A interface...looks like this:

Or is it an actual Thunderbolt external drive (which are usually a lot more expensive)?

Thanks,

its a simple question guys .please don't make it complicated

I beg to differ and have been investigating some thunderbolt options and specs for my 2011 iMac and the answers are sure far from simple. In fact it's a bloody confusing complicated mess in my opinion.

Hi Patrick,
Thanks for your input.
The question is simple, but you are dead right in that, the answer isn't !!!
I bit the bullet and bought an apple product

Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter.

It does not work with a late 2013 iMac nor an early 2014 MacBook air
I have returned the adapter.

The apple consultant took quite a while to sort out this issue.
On the apple web page for the above item, it tells you what the adapter is compatible with.

I still somehow, need to connect a 2014 MacBook air with an external drive with a USB C connection

I want to connect an early 2014 MacBook Air,
with an external drive that has a USB C connection.

I tried an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter ($69) but it does not work.

What are my options?
Thanks in advance
