I have a MBP 4,1 (2008 non-unibody). I purchased a OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD. It is installed in the regular HDD postion. I ran xbench to determine the read/write speed to ensure I'm getting the speeds I paid for. After some tests, my hdd is acheives a sequential or random write speed of 112 mb/sec. My SSD should be achieving speeds in the vicinity of 275.

Any ideas of what might be going on? I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.5.

Thanks!

How did you get the OS onto the SSD? Not cloning as this will slow down the SSD to normal HD speeds.

Write speeds are the downfall of MLC SSDs. The rates they quote are extremely optimistic and are not indicative of sustained write speeds. They are peak speeds under absolutely ideal conditions. What you're seeing is not out of the ordinary and the "outside of a lab environment" benchmark is actually pretty darned good.

My vertex 2 has similar performance:
- sequential uncached write: 128 MB/sec
- random uncached write: 132 MB/sec

But compared to my old HDD, that's still pretty good:
- sequential uncached write: 44 MB/sec
- random uncached write: 23 MB/sec

And of course the read speeds don't even begin to compare… :)
